interview for turkish portal Futuristika.org 23.02.2008 (russian
version of interview)
- Moya is your one man project. Who are you anyway? :)
- I'm just a guy who loves music, nothing more. At first I haven't been
taken to a musical class in my childhood. Then it was found out, that i
have a good musical hearing - when we talk about a piano, at the shouting
TV, in the next room, at extraneous noise, etc. I can name the correct
note with probability in 100 %. But, I can make a mistake when speech
comes about guitar (with a human voice even more difficultly) - in
general, typical passive absolute musical hearing.
- I had listened your demo back in 2006, tuned like godspeed you! black
emperor but more cinematic. What was your inspiration at that time?
Musically or general?
- It is amusing, but, when I did a material for the first Demo (within the
limits of the anonymous project), I did not hear GY!BE - In those time I
liked Clann Zu very much - even their most basement demos are very good
(not speaking about albums). In general, I an solidary with Morricone, who
doesn't trust in inspiration - happiness, pleasure etc. (all these things
named are inspiration, probably) - all these things are here, but, in my
case it'll happen after then i thought up something successful. After that
it's easy to make continuation, but, I think, it occurs more than that
you make a start from an initial theme, the harmonious plan is more or
less certain and to think up something begins much easier rather than
owing to a power of "inspiration".
- It seems that there is a lot of classiacal influence in your music.
Mozart, Chopin and - most important for us - Dvorak...
Do you think Dvorak would lived in 2008, he would be in post rock
concerts?
- Unfortunately, I would not be so assured. The largest modern musicians,
at comparison with Dvorak, strongly lose in growth. I think, Dvorak as the
real, original musician would sit at home and would compose tirelessly.
- I am a great fan of Clann Zu, sad that they are broke up. Did you get
a chance to see them live?
- No, they didn't go in tour too much. It was unreal to go to Australia,
Ireland or any European country then, and problematic now. I read that
Clann Zu arranged tour in a role of vagrant musicians, playing in streets,
etc. It's, certainly, very beautiful act, service to music in the pure
state.
- I think Moya is a real good name for a band. How did you make a
decision on that, how did you choose? Just for its perfect saying "Moya",
or does it mean anything else? And, as far as we know, You have got
another project "Tok Rukoo", is Moya stopped? Or is just Moya changing?
- First of all, It was pleasant to me like it sounds: "Moya", and only in
the second turn, it is song Godspeed you! black emperor. Many bands are
trying to make the music and the name very long - even then when it is not
justified by process of the music, and this long name is not especially
successful. Probably, short things at Moya and its short name are somehow
connected, I did not think of it. And Tok Rukoo are completely not similar
with Moya. The group gives what is not present with Moya - concerts and
other pleasant things which come with the music.
- Speaking of Tok Rukoo, how is it being in a band?
- To play alive is an irreplaceable pleasure, first of all because you
are assured in quality of what you are playing.
- How in Belarus music scene nowadays? Concerts, albums, favorite music
genres?
- The musical life sickly and is not present hopes for recover, and it's
not in forces of usual people to help, a musical life it's only a fragment
from the general pitiable picture of belorussian life.
- Do we have a chance to see you in Istanbul in a concert?
- Theoretically - yes, practically - I am afraid, that it wouldn't happen.
Moya, probably, does not deserve all those efforts which are necessary for
the organization of such action.
- What is your bed-side books nowadays?
- Now I read Mozart's letters. There was his biography, Mahler's letters
(etc) before. In general, I have a lot of books about composers, I get
acquainted with them in a such way: I begin to read a book, and during the
reading I listen, basically, only this composer, from the very first
compositions up to the last.
- Have you ever stolen a cd or has any one has borrowed from you
without bringing it back? (Our traditional question, if it sounds weird:))
- I think, it's more actually to ask about mp3-albums now). I have not
enough compact discs; I buy cd only ex-ussr musicians, all rest - in mp3
(so, i don't take cd's and not keep it myself). And in general, I do not
remember what no classical music I've listened last time.
- There is a song in Moya's 2008 album Die Hard, "Alcoholic's song",
does it have a story behind the name?
- I looked the draft copies and find among them this melody. I have
decided to use it, but have not noticed that it's an ideal drinking song.
Only when I began record it I imagine like good-natured boozers have
difficulties with moving by tongue. Actually, the wine party is
represented in track.
- Thank you and we wish you a long and satisfying musical career in the
future, with Moya and your new band Tok Rukoo.
- Thanks for interview, good luck!
